The Ten Commandments for BusinessSample

The Ten Commandments for Business

DAY 5 OF 10

The Ten Commandments for Business: Commandment Five

Early in the ministry I recruited our oldest daughter, Megan, to help with our bookkeeping. She did a remarkable job, but I knew eventually she was destined for a medical profession, not this ministry.

Many small business owners engage their children in helping with the family business. When these children are groomed for future leadership positions, it can sometimes lead to significant conflict.

As the next generation begins to learn the business, they often want to do it their way, which can lead to rebellion and disrespect of their parents.

Exodus 20:12 teaches, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Family businesses have a lot of opportunity for strife and conflict. Not only do they have family time together, but they also work together, leaving little time for separation during the days and nights. In addition, many entrepreneurs raise children who are destined also to be entrepreneurs. This can be a recipe for trouble.

If you’re in a family business, remember to honor your parents even when you disagree.

Questions for Reflection

  • What is honor? What isn’t honor? Think of some synonyms for honor. What makes a person honorable or dishonorable? What does honor look like in the present day?
  • How is your relationship with your parents? How could you improve it? If a certain amount of space is needed in the relationship, how might you honor your parents despite it?

About this Plan

The Ten Commandments for Business

As a child, I memorized the Ten Commandments, but that seems infrequent today. In this series, I want to remind us of God’s commands and share how they might impact our business lives.
