God Is Faithful to Go Before You

God’s presence is with us, before and behind us. God is eternal, meaning He is timeless, or beyond time. When we talk about Him being omnipresent, it’s not just that He’s everywhere right now, but He’s everywhere in time, too. It’s a big concept!

In Deuteronomy 31, Moses is giving his final speech to the Israelites and commissioning Joshua as their new leader. You can hear the urgency in his voice, the call to keep going, keep obeying and keep their eyes on God. I imagine they were scared. While their numbers were great, they had been a nation without land. They had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years and were about to go to war. But Moses assured them that the Lord had gone before them.

God wasn’t sending an angel or a representative. God was leading the way, so they had nothing to fear. They would not be on this journey alone. They would not face their enemy alone. The weight of victory was not on their shoulders. God Himself was with them and before them. All they had to do was follow Him.

In Psalm 139, David praises God for His omniscience and omnipresence. He gives us the image of God hemming us in. It means there is no side of you that His presence does not cover. It means God is already there in every room you walk into and every situation you face. He knows every fear and every unknown ahead of you. He knows what words will be spoken.

His hand is upon you. You need not fear or be dismayed.

In our moments of crisis, it’s easy to forget. That’s why I keep a list of ways I have seen God go before me. I encourage you to do the same, whether in a journal or on your phone. You’ll be amazed at the ways you see Him with you and before you. Because the Lord your God Himself goes before you, you can faithfully walk in obedience in what He calls you to do.

Prayer

Lord, I know You are faithful to go before me, so please open my eyes to see all the paths You have prepared for me. Please help me walk in confidence, not fear. Give me strength to walk in obedience to Your Word.
