A HOLY CRY.
A HOLY CRY IS RISING.
In the book of Revelations, John (the author) paints an incredible picture of heaven. He describes an extravagant throne full of beauty, wonder and awe. But the intrigue of this throne is not so much the throne itself, but what is happening around it. Four living creatures fly around the throne, and day and night they cry HOLY, HOLY, HOLY.
It’s interesting, that they don’t say ‘good, good, good’ or ‘faithful, faithful, faithful’. The one word that is declared throughout heaven is the word HOLY. Out of all words that are fitting to describe God, the word ‘HOLY’ was the choice.
This declaration says that there is no one like our God. He is set apart. And nothing comes close to Him. Our prayer is that the sound of heaven would become the sound of earth.
When Jesus teaches the disciples to pray, one of the sentences He introduces is ’Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven’. On earth as it is in heaven. In other words, let the sound of heaven be the sound that reverberates across the earth. That our God is Holy, Holy, Holy.
Often, we can make worship all about us. We can write songs that are about us, we can make the experience more about what we feel, what makes us comfortable, what songs we like, and how we want to worship. The truth is, worship has nothing to do with our preference, our feelings, our choices, or even our experience. Worship has nothing to do with us, and everything to do with God.
The first time worship is referenced in the bible, it has nothing to do with a song, a lyric, or a sound. The first time we see worship in the bible, is found when Abraham goes to sacrifice his son Isaac. The foundation of worship is not music, but it’s sacrifice. And that needs to be the heart posture of our cry. A sound that is a sacrifice to give, not a preference we want to have.
Worship means to ‘give worth’. And you and I are unworthy of worship. When we sing, when we give, when we sacrifice, we do it all for the One who is worthy of it all. When we worship, we GIVE WORTH, we place value, and we raise up God. Not because He needs it, but because we do.
It’s important that we come back to the heart of worship. That we become worshippers that worship in Spirit and truth. For these are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks out. Let the cry of our heart and the sound of our worship shift from ourselves, and back to God. This is a holy cry.
QUESTIONS:
1.Reflect on some of the powerful worship experiences you’ve had? What happened? What was God saying?
2.What can you change in your personal worship to make it a sacrifice?
