 <div class="label">24</div><div class="s1">The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times</div><div class="p"> 1Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2&#8220;Do you see all these things?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. &#8220;Tell us,&#8221; they said, &#8220;when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Jesus answered: &#8220;Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, &#8216;I am the Messiah,&#8217; and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.</div><div class="p"> 9 &#8220;Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.</div><div class="p"> 15 &#8220;So when you see standing in the holy place &#8216;the abomination that causes desolation,&#8217; # 24:15 
 Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 spoken of through the prophet Daniel&#8212;let the reader understand&#8212; 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. 18Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now&#8212;and never to be equaled again.</div><div class="p"> 22 &#8220;If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23At that time if anyone says to you, &#8216;Look, here is the Messiah!&#8217; or, &#8216;There he is!&#8217; do not believe it. 24For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25See, I have told you ahead of time.</div><div class="p"> 26 &#8220;So if anyone tells you, &#8216;There he is, out in the wilderness,&#8217; do not go out; or, &#8216;Here he is, in the inner rooms,&#8217; do not believe it. 27For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.</div><div class="p"> 29 &#8220;Immediately after the distress of those days</div><div class="q1"> &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;the sun will be darkened,</div><div class="q2"> and the moon will not give its light;</div><div class="q1"> the stars will fall from the sky,</div><div class="q2"> and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.&#8217; # 24:29 
 Isaiah 13:10; 34:4 </div><div class="p"> 30 &#8220;Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth # 24:30 Or the tribes of the land will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.#24:30 See Daniel 7:13-14. 31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.</div><div class="p"> 32 &#8220;Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it#24:33 Or he is near, right at the door. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.</div><div class="s1">The Day and Hour Unknown</div><div class="p"> 36 &#8220;But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, # 24:36 Some manuscripts do not have nor the Son. but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.</div><div class="p"> 42 &#8220;Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.</div><div class="p"> 45 &#8220;Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, &#8216;My master is staying away a long time,&#8217; 49and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.</div>

Send them away from my presence! Let them go! 2And if they ask you, &#8216;Where shall we go?&#8217; tell them, &#8216;This is what the Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Those destined for death, to death;</div><div class="q1">those for the sword, to the sword;</div><div class="q1">those for starvation, to starvation;</div><div class="q1">those for captivity, to captivity.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 3&#8220;I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,&#8221; declares the Lord, &#8220;the sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds and the wild animals to devour and destroy. 4I will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.</div><div class="q1"> 5&#8220;Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem?</div><div class="q2">Who will mourn for you?</div><div class="q2">Who will stop to ask how you are?</div><div class="q1"> 6You have rejected me,&#8221; declares the Lord.</div><div class="q2">&#8220;You keep on backsliding.</div><div class="q1">So I will reach out and destroy you;</div><div class="q2">I am tired of holding back.</div><div class="q1"> 7I will winnow them with a winnowing fork</div><div class="q2">at the city gates of the land.</div><div class="q1">I will bring bereavement and destruction on my people,</div><div class="q2">for they have not changed their ways.</div><div class="q1"> 8I will make their widows more numerous</div><div class="q2">than the sand of the sea.</div><div class="q1">At midday I will bring a destroyer</div><div class="q2">against the mothers of their young men;</div><div class="q1">suddenly I will bring down on them</div><div class="q2">anguish and terror.</div><div class="q1"> 9The mother of seven will grow faint</div><div class="q2">and breathe her last.</div><div class="q1">Her sun will set while it is still day;</div><div class="q2">she will be disgraced and humiliated.</div><div class="q1">I will put the survivors to the sword</div><div class="q2">before their enemies,&#8221;</div><div class="q4">declares the Lord.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 10Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,</div><div class="q2">a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!</div><div class="q1">I have neither lent nor borrowed,</div><div class="q2">yet everyone curses me.</div><div class="p"> 11The Lord said,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Surely I will deliver you for a good purpose;</div><div class="q2">surely I will make your enemies plead with you</div><div class="q2">in times of disaster and times of distress.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 12&#8220;Can a man break iron&#8212;</div><div class="q2">iron from the north&#8212;or bronze?</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 13&#8220;Your wealth and your treasures</div><div class="q2">I will give as plunder, without charge,</div><div class="q1">because of all your sins</div><div class="q2">throughout your country.</div><div class="q1"> 14I will enslave you to your enemies</div><div class="q2">in#15:14 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Syriac (see also 17:4); most Hebrew manuscripts I will cause your enemies to bring you / into a land you do not know,</div><div class="q1">for my anger will kindle a fire</div><div class="q2">that will burn against you.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 15 Lord, you understand;</div><div class="q2">remember me and care for me.</div><div class="q2">Avenge me on my persecutors.</div><div class="q1">You are long-suffering&#8212;do not take me away;</div><div class="q2">think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.</div><div class="q1"> 16When your words came, I ate them;</div><div class="q2">they were my joy and my heart&#8217;s delight,</div><div class="q1">for I bear your name,</div><div class="q2"> Lord God Almighty.</div><div class="q1"> 17I never sat in the company of revelers,</div><div class="q2">never made merry with them;</div><div class="q1">I sat alone because your hand was on me</div><div class="q2">and you had filled me with indignation.</div><div class="q1"> 18Why is my pain unending</div><div class="q2">and my wound grievous and incurable?</div><div class="q1">You are to me like a deceptive brook,</div><div class="q2">like a spring that fails.</div><div class="p"> 19Therefore this is what the Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;If you repent, I will restore you</div><div class="q2">that you may serve me;</div><div class="q1">if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,</div><div class="q2">you will be my spokesman.</div><div class="q1">Let this people turn to you,</div><div class="q2">but you must not turn to them.</div><div class="q1"> 20I will make you a wall to this people,</div><div class="q2">a fortified wall of bronze;</div><div class="q1">they will fight against you</div><div class="q2">but will not overcome you,</div><div class="q1">for I am with you</div><div class="q2">to rescue and save you,&#8221;</div><div class="q4">declares the Lord.</div><div class="q1"> 21&#8220;I will save you from the hands of the wicked</div><div class="q2">and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">16</div><div class="s1">Day of Disaster</div><div class="p"> 1Then the word of the Lord came to me: 2&#8220;You must not marry and have sons or daughters in this place.&#8221; 3For this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers: 4&#8220;They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but will be like dung lying on the ground. They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5For this is what the Lord says: &#8220;Do not enter a house where there is a funeral meal; do not go to mourn or show sympathy, because I have withdrawn my blessing, my love and my pity from this people,&#8221; declares the Lord. 6&#8220;Both high and low will die in this land. They will not be buried or mourned, and no one will cut themselves or shave their head for the dead. 7No one will offer food to comfort those who mourn for the dead&#8212;not even for a father or a mother&#8212;nor will anyone give them a drink to console them.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;And do not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down to eat and drink. 9For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Before your eyes and in your days I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in this place.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;When you tell these people all this and they ask you, &#8216;Why has the Lord decreed such a great disaster against us? What wrong have we done? What sin have we committed against the Lord our God?&#8217; 11then say to them, &#8216;It is because your ancestors forsook me,&#8217; declares the Lord, &#8216;and followed other gods and served and worshiped them. They forsook me and did not keep my law. 12But you have behaved more wickedly than your ancestors. See how all of you are following the stubbornness of your evil hearts instead of obeying me. 13So I will throw you out of this land into a land neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;However, the days are coming,&#8221; declares the Lord, &#8220;when it will no longer be said, &#8216;As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,&#8217; 15but it will be said, &#8216;As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.&#8217; For I will restore them to the land I gave their ancestors.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;But now I will send for many fishermen,&#8221; declares the Lord, &#8220;and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks. 17My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes. 18I will repay them double for their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled my land with the lifeless forms of their vile images and have filled my inheritance with their detestable idols.&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 19 Lord, my strength and my fortress,</div><div class="q2">my refuge in time of distress,</div><div class="q1">to you the nations will come</div><div class="q2">from the ends of the earth and say,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods,</div><div class="q2">worthless idols that did them no good.</div><div class="q1"> 20Do people make their own gods?</div><div class="q2">Yes, but they are not gods!&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 21&#8220;Therefore I will teach them&#8212;</div><div class="q2">this time I will teach them</div><div class="q2">my power and might.</div><div class="q1">Then they will know</div><div class="q2">that my name is the Lord.</div><div class="b"></div>
