Becoming a Supernatural Leader

DAY 2 OF 6

SEEK THE RIGHT THINGS

What's the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning and the last thing you dwell on before drifting off to sleep? What fuels you through your day?

The answers to those questions are important because they reveal some of the things that are most important to you. So, what is that for you? What drives you?

Elijah was a leader who sought God first. In 1 Kings 17, he prayed for a drought. Now, that might seem strange, but Elijah wanted God’s Glory to be on display at a time when the king was worshiping and setting up an altar for a false god. After Elijah prayed, he hid from the king, and God fed him from a stream and through birds. When the stream dried up, the Lord called Elijah to go, and Elijah followed where the Lord led. He didn’t seek gifts, and he didn’t chase more food or water. Elijah simply sought the Lord and followed Him with each step. Elijah was more focused on obeying and following God than he was on what God could physically give him at that moment.

As Elijah sought the right thing, God provided for him; his prayers were answered in miraculous ways. Elijah didn’t pray that it wouldn’t rain so he could get noticed. His heart was to direct people back to God. His persistence was something even James wrote about, but Elijah wasn’t after recognition. Elijah was simply seeking and obeying God.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Sometimes we get it backward; we can get caught up in seeking THINGS first. But this verse shows us that when we seek God first, those other (and lesser) things will be ADDED. The blessings God has for you aren’t meant to take the place of Himself in your life — they’re a bonus. The real blessing is simply getting to know God for who He is.

Don’t get so busy chasing what’s insignificant that you miss what’s truly important. Your leadership will come as an overflow of what you’re seeking. Godly leadership is allowing God to lead you so you can lead others in a way that points them back to Him. It’s putting a priority on developing both your skills and character.

But it all begins with the simple question: What (or who) are you seeking?

Inhale and pray: God, I want to seek and obey You.

Exhale and pray: Show me what I need to stop chasing so I can experience more of You.
