Exploring the Book of Acts: The Holy Spirit

DAY 5 OF 6

Evangelistic Breakthrough

One of the main turning points in the book of Acts is the dramatic story of Peter and Cornelius, a Roman centurion. God supernaturally orchestrated this divine encounter, in which a group of Gentiles hear the gospel, receive the Holy Spirit, and are baptized. The major barrier of Jewish disdain for Gentiles was broken, first, in Peter’s vision of unclean animals (repeated three times to emphasize that it came from God). The barrier was further broken by Peter’s entrance to Cornelius’ home. Finally, the barrier was obliterated by the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on Cornelius’ household. God’s intention to include Gentiles in the faith of faith was irrefutable.

Read Acts 10:23-48 and then consider:

  1. In this scene, Peter has his first experience of ministry among the Gentiles. What shift in understanding was necessary for him to share the gospel in Cornelius’ house? Why was it important that Peter have this experience?
  2. This passage is full of references to the supernatural activity of the Spirit: Cornelius and Peter’s visions, Jesus being anointed with the Spirit at his baptism, Jesus’ healing and deliverance ministry, Jesus’ resurrection, a Gentile Pentecost, and an evangelistic breakthrough. What do these show about the role of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ mission?
  3. The evangelistic breakthrough described in this passage repeats the pattern of previous evangelistic breakthroughs in Jerusalem (Acts 2: 37-41; 4:4), in Samaria (Acts 8:4-25), and in the life of an Ethiopian official (Acts 8:26-40). All are signs of the Spirit’s presence and power. What are contemporary examples of the Spirit moving in power to bring people to Jesus?
  4. Where do you long to see evangelistic breakthroughs? Pray for the Holy Spirit to supernaturally speak to unbelievers and prepare them to hear the gospel. Pray also for the Holy Spirit to overcome barriers in the minds and attitudes of Christians towards unbelievers.
