DAY 8 OF 12

Deborah and Jael

It's so peculiar that Deborah led the nation at a time when women held no notable place in society. We see that Israel had drifted from the Lord, so God allowed them to become captive to King Jaben. King Jaben's military commander was a cruel man named Sisera, and Israel suffered under his rule for over twenty years.

Barak, when given the word from the Lord through Deborah to pursue Sisera, telling him that the Lord would deliver them, refused to go unless Deborah accompanied him. As a result of Barak's fear, Deborah prophesied God would give victory over Sisera to a woman.

We might assume that Deborah would be the victor in this story, but she is not. She made herself available to God, and He provided victory through yet another woman, Jael. Although this passage is very graphic and difficult to read, God was faithful to His word and delivered Israel from their cruel oppressor. This wise and brave woman defeated the enemy of an entire nation while he slept and prevented the needless loss of other lives through war.

Both women in this story took leadership when others refused to do so. They set aside their fear and potential consequences to stand up for the justice of their people, and God gave them victory.

How did the story of Deborah and Jael inspire you?

How can you help make a difference in the community around you?
