Romans Part 6: RESPONSESample
Complacency or Commitment?
As both a Jewish and Roman citizen, Paul was fully aware of the pitfalls of living in such a society, including the piety that can relieve one’s mind of the desire for a true and meaningful relationship with the Creator of the universe. He shares his most prolific explanation of the gospel in his letter to the Romans. This letter provides deep and compelling evidence that following Christ is a worthwhile, rich, and abundant commitment.
Easily adopting the practices of cultures around them; Roman culture embraced philosophies and practices of slavery, debauchery, and a self-serving lifestyle. They were willing to compromise their beliefs (which were not godly in the first place) in order to gain status and pleasure. Complacency opened the door wide for all sorts of immoral acts both personal and public.
This is the culture that surrounded the Christ followers in Rome. Brutal violence and murder posed as entertainment as people from all faiths and walks of life were sacrificed in the Coliseum. Marriages and divorces were convenient acts, and all forms of ungodly sexual acts permeated this pagan culture. All the while, philosophers and scholars justified these practices, soothing the minds of those who simply lived for their selfish pleasure.
As Paul nears the end of his letter to the Romans, he gives practical advice for Roman Christians to follow in order to live a life dedicated to Christ. Aware of the common practices in Roman society, he shares distinct words to help Roman Christians, giving them guidance about sins that might beset them.
While we may not witness Christians being thrown to lions, our society contains many practices that are “socially acceptable,” yet those practices are sin before God. Knowing the incredible sacrifice of Christ and His gospel message, even if we serve Him as our Lord, we are not immune to the influences constantly bombarding us. As we read Paul’s warning of how to live out our lives as Christ Followers, may we remain committed, not complacent, in our walk.
