Paul didn’t have 100% certainty of what would become of his situation. But what he did have was confidence. What he was confident in was:

• God was in control, no matter how bad his situation may have seemed
• He was confident because of the prayers of the Philippians and the help of the Spirit of God, that he wouldn’t be abandoned or ashamed by God. He trusted that he was in the Will of God. That God had him right where he was supposed to be. This was not a punishment from God.
• His confidence wasn’t in his life being saved, but that his life or death would result in the glory of God.

As we go on to read Paul makes it clear that he does not fear death, he actually goes as far as to say his death would be a gain. For 2 reasons this would be true: that God would receive the glory, and that he would be fully united with God!

Paul knew that if he were to live, it would be to continue to do the will and work of God on Earth.

Though Paul was torn between the two, he knew that there was more work that needed to be done and therefore expected to be spared for that sake.
