Ideal home
What sort of place would you most like to live in? Personally, I’d be delighted to think that the creator of my ideal world had put me first in his plan – had even constructed the place around me as his starting point. This seems to be the case with the Garden of Eden, perhaps not chronologically, but in terms of God’s intentions and priorities.
I’d love to inhabit a place which combined practicality with items designed solely to delight the residents. I’d hope that my home was balanced ecologically and climatically: that it was irrigated, but never flooded; equipped with everything I and my companions needed, but not exploited and spoilt.
Longing for Eden
I’d be glad to do a little satisfying work. Most of all I’d love to share the space with friends I could choose, with merry creatures, with a God I could relate to and with the one gorgeous soul mate set aside for me!
Has there ever been a human who has not, at some point, sensed a yearning for such a place? From deep within us comes the intuition that this unsatisfactory set-up of ours is not the way things were meant to be. Longing for Eden is not only escapist fantasy; it is in our nature. God meant us for better than this.
Respond: Would you rather live in the urban heaven of Revelation or the rural paradise of Genesis? (So far as I know, there is no right answer to this.)
