WordLive - Year One

DAY 153 OF 366

Prepare: ‘How great is our God.’ Consider for a few moments the absolute greatness of God.

The true King
Even though John Lennon apologised for saying The Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’, the damage was done. Misinterpreted by magazines and taken out of context by religious organisations, all Lennon could do to calm the storm was clarify what he really meant and say sorry.

Unfortunately, in this celebrity-driven, media-glorified world, it’s easy to confuse success with deity. As Peter continues to fascinate the Pentecost crowd he makes sure there is no mistaking who the true King really is.

Fulfilling God’s plan
One thousand years before Christ, a much-admired warrior, musician and poet called David became king of Israel. It is no accident that Peter quotes this beloved, highly respected ancestor of Jesus and the effect is twofold (v 29).

First, by comparison, Jesus surpasses even the most righteous of all earthly kings to conclusively deserve the royal title. No room for doubt: Jesus is the one true King and Messiah (v 31).

Second, the tomb-busting resurrection of Jesus fulfils specific promises made by God through King David. This was no random incident but an integral part of God’s eternal plan. History had spoken and Peter connects the dots with all the artistry of a skilled sign-writer, creating a picture of love and redemption with every brush stroke.

Respond: Has anyone else taken the place of God? Is there anything you do that is more satisfying than following Jesus? If so, maybe it’s time to say sorry and return to your first love.
