The Favored Child

DAY 5 OF 5

Wear the Gift

When Joseph was given his special robe, he could have easily and justifiably said, “You see me, boy, I eh wearing dis ting you know. ‘Dem fellas already doe like my head. Lemme just pack dis ting in a corner and play it safe”, but he didn’t. Joseph wore his robe.

It’s existed almost as long as the existence of humanity: Many are given gifts by our Father and opt not to wear them for fear that they will offend those who see them. But wearing the gift is important.

For one, wearing it says to the giver that you are appreciative of the gift, but it is also a sign of acceptance of the destiny assigned to the gift. When you wear the gift, you prepare yourself for the destination which it foreshadows; you subconsciously internalize the promise that it holds, and it sets things in motion to carry you to second in command in Egypt.

Imagine being a young woman from a difficult, impoverished background, but you’re gifted. You’re gifted with a beautiful voice that rivals Whitney Houston and Patti LaBelle’s put together, but you NEVER sing. This gift has the potential to take you and your entire family out of poverty, but it doesn’t, because you NEVER sing. It is NEVER worn, and as such, it does not fulfill its purpose.

Can you imagine what would happen if Michael Jordan had never worn his cloak of perseverance? I can. And let me tell you, imagining a world where I can’t hop on to YouTube to be inspired by video documentaries and odes to the man’s greatness is not a great world at all.

Can you imagine what the NBA in 2020 would have been like if LeBron James had simply opted to not use his ability to hoop?

Can you imagine not having “If Only You Knew” or “Songs in A minor” if Patti LaBelle or Alicia Keys had neglected to wear their gifts?

Can you imagine never having heard Celine Dion’s voice?

Can you imagine NOT having 12 quality studio albums from Kirk Franklin to carry you through life’s dark days?

Can you imagine not having your precious MacBook or Surface Pro if Steve Jobs or Bill Gates had opted not to wear their gifts?

Understand this:

The gift which your Father has given to you sets you apart. Whenever you wear it, wherever you wear it, people will see it. It pops. It is a “coat of many colors” and, therefore, cannot take on the glow of obscurity. Some will embrace it, but some will also be offended by what it means. Still, wear the gift or forsake the destiny.
