Being Made Whole Through The Gospel

DAY 7 OF 15

Don’t Follow Your Heart!

Reflect:

“Follow your heart” is advice I am sure we all have heard from friends or family. Unbelievers do not understand that our hearts are sick and deceitful because God has not opened their eyes to that fact, yet. For the believer, though, it’s a starting and maintaining point of this life lived in Christ; which is continually repenting of our sick hearts. Even well-meaning sisters in Christ might tell us to follow our hearts, but if we know the Word, we know that our hearts are deceitful. Our hearts can steer us in the wrong direction, they are desperately sick and in need of healing. Sin will always be present in this life. Through repentance and sanctification, we grow more like Christ, but our hearts can still deceive us, no matter how long we have been walking with the Lord.

I had a particular choice to make a few years back. My options were either to follow my heart, or do what the Lord was asking me to do. After much turmoil, I chose the latter. I mention my feelings of turmoil because sometimes obeying the Lord can be very difficult. My heart was deceitful, and was steering me in a wrong direction. If I had followed my heart, I can tell you with certainty that I would not be where I am right now, and the Lord most likely would not be using me to write for His glory. The Lord searches and knows our hearts. Psalm 139:23. We cannot trust our hearts in all situations. We must lean on the Lord, not on our own understanding Proverbs 3:5, and seek Him. The next time someone advises you to follow your heart; I urge you, dear sisters, to seek Him and His Word before you do.

Pray:

Search my heart, O' God, and see if there is any wicked way in me. Create in me a clean and pure heart before you Lord. Amen.

Your Turn:

Let’s not take nor give the advice of “follow your heart” lightly. Seek Him and His Word to know your true heart’s motives.
