Promises in the PsalmsSample
Promises: Rise Up! Stand Firm!
Some people like to trust in the tangible things they can see and touch, such as a strong showing of the Dow, a large well-equipped military, a secure retirement, and their political party running the government. This psalm reminds us that the world puts its hope in well-built, fortified chariots pulled by strong, speedy horses. Unfortunately, confidence in the things of the world will always end in failure. But trusting in our God allows us to “rise up and stand firm.”
Psalm 20:7-8
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fail, but we rise up and stand firm.
For the believer, tangible possessions are to be used, not worshiped. God calls us to trust him in all of life’s circumstances. Material things will rust, rot, and decay. He is the only One who is the same from eternity past to eternity future.
What are you trusting in? What causes confidence to well up inside of you? What do you look for and cling to regardless of whether the stocks are up or down? One day the Lord our God will be the only One there is to place our hope in. Trusting in the temporal will bring us to our knees in failure. Trust in God! Rise up! And stand firm!
Father, help me trust in you alone regardless of the times, my health, or my job situation. Don’t let me allow anything to supplant my trust in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
