Unexpected Joy: Finding True Purpose in SurrenderSample
Suffering and Hopelessness
While we may not know the specific reasons for our suffering, we can be comforted in knowing there is great purpose and meaning in it. In his letter to the Christians in Rome, Paul wrote, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
The good Paul is referring to is growth in Christlikeness, and not the good our finite minds might desire. This idea is also taught in the first few verses of James’ letter to Jewish Christians. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
Perseverance is a faith muscle, and as it gets stronger through trials, God uses that faith to do good works for his glory. In his grace, he allows us to benefit from this same work. People will say, “God has a plan for your life,” which is true. But his plan for us includes the experience of suffering that allows us to grow in Christlike character, co-reign with God over creation, and glorify him in all we do. An epignosis (experiential understanding) of suffering also leads us to where to put our hope.
An understanding of what God says about suffering and hopelessness is critical to developing a correct view of brokenness. Only in the Christian worldview does suffering have a meaningful and intended purpose. Only in the Christian worldview can we trust that God knows our suffering. Only Jesus offers any hope to a hopeless world.
Something to Remember:
God has promised that the suffering believers experience is for our benefit, and that in him we can persevere with peace and joy.
