From an early age, we were taught to trust people closest to us — our parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, coaches, neighbors, and friends. We expected these people to be safe, trustworthy, and consistent. Many of these people likely lived up to that, but there have inevitably been some who have let us down in a big way.
Unfortunately, when people let us down, we begin to put our guard up. We build these walls in an attempt to not get hurt again in the same way, and there is a lot of wisdom in that. However, sometimes the barriers we put up because of one person or one circumstance end up causing us to have barriers with everyone . . . including God.
It can be really hard to trust that God is our loving, heavenly parent when people closest to us have let us down in a big way.
In today's Scripture, Moses is speaking to the people of Israel, who had endured years of being enslaved. They had been mistreated by others for so long that this may have tainted their view of God. So, Moses reminds them to not view God through the lens of other people's failures. Unlike flawed people, we can count on the fact that God is always faithful.
Even though those closest to us have let us down, we can trust that God's love is unwavering. God won't walk away, break a promise, or abandon us. Even when we don't feel loved, God's love can be trusted.

About this Plan
For the next four weeks, we’ll look at how the earliest followers of Jesus created a new kind of community as God's family. Through their example, we’ll learn that there is enough when we share what we have — and if there isn’t enough, God provides. We'll also learn that our actions can speak when words aren’t enough and that God’s love is always enough.
