Serving Challenge Kids: An 11-Day Adventure to Serve Like Jesus

DAY 6 OF 11

How Did Jesus Serve?

Pelorus Jack, or Jack for short, was a dolphin first spotted in 1888, guiding ships through a dangerous channel in New Zealand. Jack would swim alongside the ship for about twenty minutes, leading them past sharp rocks and tight corners.

No one knew how Jack learned to do this, but ship captains began to trust him so much that if they did not see the dolphin, they would wait until he appeared. There wasn’t a single shipwreck while he guided them.

In 1904, a sailor on the SS Penguin tried to shoot Jack, but the dolphin fortunately survived. When the New Zealand government found out, they passed a law to protect Jack. As a result, the incredible dolphin continued to guide ships through the channel—that is, every ship except the SS Penguin.

Without Jack’s help, that ship had to make its way alone. Five years later, the SS Penguin sank in the channel after hitting a rock during a storm. It was a terrible accident. Seventy-five people drowned, and only thirty people survived. It was one of the worst maritime incidents in New Zealand’s history.

Some animals can be taught to rescue, but no one trained Jack. So why did he do it? No one knows the answer. They only know that Jack understood the way through that channel and used his knowledge to help humans.

We may not understand how the dolphin could guide all those ships, but we know how Jesus serves us. He came down to earth from heaven as a tiny baby. He grew up obeying his parents, studying the Scriptures, praying, and growing. But people needed rescuing, like the boats in the New Zealand channel. Jesus was put to death in the most unfair act of all. After three days, He rose again and is now in heaven.

But going to heaven didn’t stop Jesus from serving. He knows what it feels like to be a human being on Earth. He is still serving you every day. He keeps you safe and gives you a new day. He brings blessings into your life and celebrates the good times with you.

Becoming human was one of the best ways Jesus could serve you.

Challenge:

One way to show people they are cared for is by letting them go first.

Let someone go ahead of you in line next time you are at the store.
