Purify Your Mind Series (Part 1) by Joe KirbySample
Big Macs and Sex
It is believed that in this verse Paul is dealing with an unhealthy mindset that the people of Corinth had adopted. They reasoned this way: If your stomach desires food, eat as many different foods as you like; if your body desires sex, have sex with as many different people as you like (an attitude not unheard-of even today). But Paul emphatically says, “No! The Christian’s body is dedicated to the Lord.”
I can eat a Big Mac, and though I may feel a little guilty about the calories, I can go about my daily life unharmed. However, when a person has intercourse, his mind, heart, and spirit become entwined. Every time those who fornicate give their body to another, it is like they are peeling an onion; they lose a layer of themselves, and tears often follow. Repeat this process often enough and what happens to the onion? It’s empty, with nothing left to give. That’s why if you ask a seasoned fornicator if it was worth it, they will often respond, “I don’t know who I am anymore, I feel lost.” Well, praise God, we worship a Savior who came to seek and save the lost, and all those who trust in Him and submit their lives to Him can be sure their lives are safe in His hands. And if you let Him, those hands will slowly rebuild the layers that were lost to the wastefulness of sin.
