Higher Ground - the Sermon on the Mount

DAY 35 OF 36

Built on the Rock

Jesus concludes His “Sermon on the Mount” with a powerful analogy that highlights the importance of building our lives on a solid foundation. He uses the example of two builders, one who chose a firm rock as a foundation and another who built on shifting sand. The contrast between the two outcomes could not be more significant; one house withstood the storm, while the other collapsed in ruin.

In our spiritual journey, we are called to build our lives on a firm foundation—a foundation that can weather the storms of life. The material for this foundation is found in the words of Jesus, the very words that guide us to higher ground. It is not enough to simply hear these words; we must put them into practice.

The storms of life will come, just as Jesus assured us they would. The rains will fall, the floods will rise, and the winds of adversity will blow. These will include challenges, hardships, and times of testing. However, when we have built our lives on the rock of Jesus' teachings, we will remain steady and unshakable. Our faith will be tested, but it will endure. Our hope will be challenged, but it will persevere. Our love will be tried, but it will thrive.

Building on the rock implies that we take the teachings of Jesus seriously. It means aligning our actions, thoughts, and desires with His words. It involves reading and studying the Scriptures, allowing them to transform our hearts and minds. It requires a commitment to prayer, seeking God's guidance and strength to live out His truths. Through every storm, we must cling to the solid ground of God's Word, finding our stability in His promises.

On the other hand, building on sand symbolizes a life built on worldly pursuits, temporary pleasures, and human wisdom. Ignoring the teachings of Jesus leads to an unstable foundation, one that crumbles under pressure. The rain, floods, and winds represent the trials, temptations, and challenges of life. Those who don't rely on and follow His teachings are vulnerable to destruction when adversity strikes. Ultimately, they find themselves lost, broken, and with no higher ground to stand on.

Today, let us examine our foundation. Are we building on the rock, or have we settled on shifting sand? A life built on anything but Jesus will not stand the test of time. So may we choose to be wise builders, diligently listening to His words and faithfully applying them to our lives. Let us build our lives on the solid rock of Jesus, finding our higher ground in Him.

Reflective Questions

  1. How can you ensure that you are actively applying God's Word in your daily life rather than merely hearing and forgetting it?
  2. What storms of life have you faced recently, and how did your foundation in Christ sustain you through those trials?
  3. Are there areas of your life where you have been building on the shifting sands of worldly values or your own understanding? How can you align those areas with the unwavering truth of God's Word?

Memory Verse

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matthew 7:24 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for Your Word, which guides me to build my life on a solid foundation. Help me to not only be a hearer of Your Word but a doer also. Help me to hear, obey, and apply Your Word to my life every single day. Help me to anchor my life in Your Word in the midst of the storms of life.
