I Quit Social Media for 1 Year (4 Biblical Lessons I Learned)

DAY 2 OF 4

Day 2. Enhanced Social Interactions

1 Thessalonians 5:11 encourages us always to strive to build each other up. And honestly, social media makes it easier than ever to “connect” with more friends.

In theory, to encourage and build each other up.

And so I was definitely worried about stepping away from social media for a year. I was nervous that I might lose contact and weaken some of the important relationships in my life.

But interestingly enough, the opposite happened.

When the pings and notifications took a back seat, something amazing happened.

My conversations with friends became more meaningful. I learned more about their lives, shared my experiences, and found comfort in knowing that genuine friendships still exist.

Conversations with friends started to feel more... real. We laughed, shared, and dove into stuff that matters. We were living Proverbs 18:24 - we were truly there for each other, proving friendships can go beyond the digital sphere.

We tend to rely on social media to stay connected. But during this year, I found that a call or meeting in person can convey what hundreds of Instagram posts and DMs cannot.

We've gotten so used to checking in on social media.

But, do you remember the last time a DM allowed you to deeply connect like a good, long heart-to-heart talk over coffee?

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to spur each other on and not give up meeting together. And nothing beats the good old-fashioned way of doing that.

That’s not to say that relationships can’t be developed and nurtured using social media, but that’s not the only option. Life outside the news feed can be pretty rewarding too.
