What the Bible Has to Say About ClothingSample
Jesus bore our shame on the cross
“And when they had crucified Him [=Jesus], they divided His garments among them by casting lots.” (Matthew 27:35)
In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve clothes to cover their shame caused by sin. However, covering up something does not solve the underlying problem. Therefore, God did more than just provide clothes. He also provided a Savior who would bear the punishment of sin and free people from its grip. This person was Jesus Christ. He is God, but He also became human in order to solve the problem of humanity’s sinfulness and rebellion against God.
Jesus was falsely accused, mocked, and beaten. Soldiers put a dark red cloak on Him, as if He was a king, to make fun of Him. Later, when Jesus was crucified, He hung there naked, and the soldiers took His clothes for themselves. Jesus was denied all human dignity. Only after His death was His body covered in a linen cloth.
Jesus was the Son of God, worthy of all honor and praise. But He emptied Himself of this glory to bear the guilt and shame for our sins and to die in our place. Because He took our sins away, “we may be confident and unashamed before Him at his coming.” (1 John 2:28)
Thank you, Jesus, for taking away our shame!
About this Plan
You will not find clothing style advice in the Bible. Nor will you find the latest fashions. Yet God's Word has a lot to say about clothing: why we wear clothes at all, how we should dress, and how God offers us beautiful, spotless clothing to cover our sins. Will you read with us?
