TheLionWithin.Us: How to Lead Your Wife

DAY 2 OF 6

In-Laws and Out-Laws

When you say “I do” you are saying “I do” to her family, too.

Ruth gives a great example of the importance of family. She was willing to travel to a foreign land with her mother-in-law even after her husband was dead. In-laws can be a major stressor for many marriages. It’s important to learn how to work together on areas of contention, even when it means initiating hard conversations. This is where a healthy level of give and take needs to occur.

Remember this - you want your wife to have a good relationship with her family. That is actually a very good sign and an indicator that you married a godly woman. Support this and work on the issues you have with her family as delicately as possible. You do not want to get into a situation where you are making your wife choose between you and her family.

Leaders stand beside their woman and work through these issues together. She may have adverse feelings about your side as well, so be aware of where she is and do not be one-sided in your thinking. One solid approach is to let each spouse be the one who communicates difficult decisions and information with their own family.

Question to Consider

  1. Does your wife know your true feelings about her family?
  2. Do you know how your wife truly feels about your family?
  3. What actions will you commit to today to be the leader God intends you to be?
