GLEANINGS - Exodus

DAY 2 OF 23

Have you had a burning bush experience?

Moses met God in a mysterious way on Mount Horeb. The experience of the burning bush changed his life forever. God wants us to encounter Him, too.

1. God interrupted the routine of Moses.

According to Exodus 3:1, Moses was handling his daily workload as usual that day, tending Jethro's flock. But this was not going to be just another workday. It was going to be a day of a truly remarkable encounter with God. We may be surviving through the routines of life. But God wants us not just to survive but thrive. God waits to speak to us in our daily routine. Be sensitive to His voice. Are you willing to allow God to interrupt your life or are you too comfortable in your routines?

2. Our God is a God who is not silent. He speaks.

God looks to give us powerful encounters that could dramatically transform our life's journey. However, we need to be sensitive to His presence and His still, small voice. We need to finetune our spiritual ears to hear Him, by being quiet in His presence and allowing Him to speak to us through His Word. Practicing spiritual disciplines can improve our spiritual hearing.

How did Moses have a burning bush experience?

1. He was willing to step out of his routine and notice what God was doing. In Exodus 3:3 we read that Moses was willing to turn aside and see. How have we been walking past the “bushes” in our lives? Will we even be able to notice when a bush beside us is on fire? God is present in the mundane, simple activities that surround us on a daily basis.

2. He was willing to seek God. In Exodus 3:4 we find that without hesitation, Moses responded and said, “Here am I.” When we respond to God, He will call out to us by name, just as He did to Moses. When we develop the habit of stopping to listen to what God is doing in our lives, and how He is moving, maybe we’ll start to notice the burning bushes all around us – and the Holy ground on which we stand.

3. He did not treat God casually, but with reverence.

In Exodus 3:5-6 we read that "Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.” Awe is defined as a reverential feeling of respect, mixed with wonder and fear, and that's certainly how Moses must have felt! The need to experience God's holy presence afresh is a definite need among God's people today.

4. He found it difficult to understand God’s call on his life. In Exodus 3:10-11 we find that Moses was not the best listener at first. But, when their relationship grew deeper, Moses had faith in God in everything. Even when the tasks became harder, He followed God’s command. And in the end, he saw that God was true to him.

5. He was assured of God’s presence to fulfil the call.InExodus 3:12 we read “God said, I will surely be with you; and this shall be the sign to you that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” When God call us he will also empower us to fulfil the task.

Consider this biblical senior citizen who had likely given up on his youthful dreams and ambitions and settled down to a quiet, nomadic life in the desert—until he had a life-changing encounter with God. That senior citizen was Moses. You are never too old for a burning bush experience. Are you ready?

Application Question:

Have you had a burning bush experience in your life where you have had an encounter with God? If not, why not?

Quote:

“We need to make sure we are not analyzing the events in our lives from a secular, human, worldly point of view rather than from a divine, spiritual, Godly point of view.” - Tony Evans

Prayer:

Lord, I thank you that you are a God who speaks. I am sorry for not spending time listening to you. Help me even today to listen to your still small voice. Amen
