Verse 18 says, “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.”
This begs the question: how can the people James is writing to be “firstfruits” in all God has created? James is not only talking about the original creation here, but of new creation. As the word of truth comes alive in us, it is as if we are made new, born again.
This birth is described as a gift because it enables us to live above the temptation of sin. As we persevere in not giving into temptation, our desires begin to gradually change as we are internally transformed.

About this Plan

The Epistle of James has so much to offer us as followers of Jesus today. It was originally written to Jewish Christians spread all over the ancient world. The message is straight to the point, practical, and challenging. Wherever we find ourselves following Jesus, this letter can help us realize how our spiritual and practical life should be one in the same.
