The 3 Types of Tithing, and the 2 You Should Avoid

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3 - Tithing as Worship: An Act of Thanksgiving and Allegiance

Today we are getting to the third type of tithing mentioned which we are calling “tithing as worship”. This practice predates both covenant and legalistic tithing, originating in Genesis 14 when Abram offered a tenth of his plunder to Melchizedek, the King of Salem.

In Hebrews 7, this act is further explored, affirming the superior's blessing of the inferior and the inferior's offering of tithes to the superior. Tithing as worship signifies the acknowledgment of God as the sovereign Lord and the source of blessings. It also expresses personal allegiance to Him.

And importantly as you study out all the Bible verses about money, you will begin to notice a trend. That being that God really seems to care less about money and more about our hearts.

And “tithing as worship” does just that. It focuses on the condition of one's heart rather than the specific percentage of income given.

Speaking personally, my journey with tithing has been quite transformative. Initially (my wife and I) approached it from a legalistic standpoint, feeling obligated to give our 10% based on what we believed the Bible commanded.

However, as time went on, our perspective began to shift. We started to see tithing as more than just a rigid obligation; it became an act of worship and thanksgiving.

We realized that tithing was not meant to be a mere transaction with God, where we expected something in return for our giving. It was about expressing our gratitude and acknowledging God as our superior, the source of all our blessings. Tithing became a way for us to demonstrate our allegiance to Him and to honor Him with our resources.

This change in perspective led us to extend our giving beyond the traditional 10% tithe. We no longer saw it as a legalistic requirement but as a heartfelt response to God's grace and blessings in our lives.

Our giving has increased up to 42% of our income, not out of obligation, but out of a genuine desire to worship God and show our gratitude for all He has done for us.

Through this journey, we have come to understand that tithing is not solely about the percentage of our income; it's about the condition of our hearts. It's about experiencing the freedom and joy that come from giving generously and wholeheartedly. Tithing as worship has allowed us to grow spiritually, deepen our faith, and experience the transformation that comes when our giving is aligned with our love for God.
