One Sided Marriage

DAY 1 OF 6

It Takes 2 To Become 1

We see in today’s passage in Genesis 2 that God had a design for marriage from the beginning. That design was for the husband and the wife to be united as one: not just the physical oneness in their sexual relationship but also spiritual and emotional union.

A one-sided marriage exists when one spouse does all of the work to make the marriage better. One spouse wants the marriage to be good and to last and the other does not really seem to care where the marriage is heading. For the one who cares, the work becomes exhausting. They are constantly looking for ways to make the marriage better while their spouse sits and watches, or has become complacent or checked out.

Most marriages do not begin that way. At the starting line both are all in. Both want an awesome marriage. Yet, as the race of marriage continues, one is dropping out of the race while the other runs harder and harder. The reality is that when only one spouse is fighting for the marriage it will not work. God’s plan was “two become one.” There are two halves to the one and one half can never achieve oneness on their own.

Is there hope? Yes. Where do you begin? Let’s go back to the Creator. We know that He wants your marriage to thrive and not just survive. If you have not, invite Him into the process. You need Him. You will wear out. He will not. You do not have all the answers. He does. Seek His wisdom, as James 1:5 tells us, and ask Him for it.

Step one for you is letting go of all that you are doing to make your marriage work and putting it all in God’s hands.

Today’s Challenge:

  • Bring all your concerns, challenges and pain to God.
  • Ask Him to lead you. Ask Him to guide your words and actions. Ask Him to give you hope, not in you or your spouse, but in Him.

About this Plan

One Sided Marriage

When one spouse has control but does little or nothing for the marriage, while the other spouse pours their time, emotion, effort, and energy into the marriage, we have a one-sided marriage. Join us in this five-day plan by Dr. Kim Kimberling to take a deep dive into what God says about marriage and how to deal with this issue in a way that honors Him.
