Gideon: Following God's CallSample

Gideon: Following God's Call

DAY 7 OF 7

Gideon’s Charge!

Arise, for the LORD has given the host of Midian into your hand. (v. 15)

All week, we’ve focused on the call of God. Alongside Gideon, we’ve seen that God’s call begins when he tells us who we are and where he’s sending us. We’ve learned that we can only respond to God’s call when we understand who God is and when we allow Jesus to cleanse us from sin. We’ve faced up to our fears, our pride, and the sheer size of the task. Now, it’s time to charge.

When Gideon and his tiny army come to the moment of battle, they know that they have a job, and God has a job. Their job is to follow God’s specific instructions: to blow their trumpets and to shine their torches. Then they simply stand still while God does his job and the enemy runs. Down through the ages, God’s people have discovered that when we work together with God, he does most of the work. Moses told his people, “The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent” (Exod. 14:14). Paul told the church to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you” (Phil. 2:12-13). When we work with God, he never lets us fight alone.

As you seek to follow God’s call today—whether large or small—will you ask him what your job is? As you carry out God’s instructions, will you watch for the ways he shows up to fight for you?

As you pray, thank God for his mighty work on your behalf.
