Have you ever found yourself in a sweet time with God only to walk away and completely lose patience with a situation or another person, forgetting all God’s comfort and peace? Me too. We are imperfect beings! But we also mistake our time with God as a time that’s all about us. We only consider how God meets our needs and gives us peace. But because God is the ultimate Love-Giver and the relentless Pursuer, His call goes way beyond the warm feelings we receive from Him. He calls us to give with the talents He’s given us, as well as pour out into others the power, light, and radical love He’s pouring into us. What does this mean in practice?

My friend, Kori, helps Syrian refugees relocated to Nashville. The work can be overwhelming; the needs and language barriers are tremendous. But Kori says, “As God has opened my eyes to the incredible needs of these people, my prayers have begun to turn outward – toward them and others in the world who suffer the same way – instead of turning first to my needs.”

Even before His ultimate sacrifice for us, Jesus taught us to love, serve, and sacrifice for others. He was always challenging His disciples to “go” and serve, heal the world and preach His truth to those they met. He called the crowd gathered for the Sermon on the Mount to be salt and light for the world. When I’m in my quiet time with God, I’ve begun to ask, “What can I do with this truth You’re teaching me?” “How do I tangibly, physically give this message of Your love to those in my space today?” Here at the end of our week of contemplating God’s love, let’s ask Him these questions.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that “the Father of all compassion” has poured out comfort on us, so that we may lavish comfort on others. Let’s obey the call and courageously and sacrificially give away the perfect, heart-stirring, limitless, passionate love God so generously and recklessly pours out on us!
