1+1=3: A Threefold Cord

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

As we journey through life, we all face trials and hardships that can sometimes appear to never end (See Job). In these difficult times, it can be tempting to withdraw and try to go through it alone. However, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 remind us of the importance of having a mentor or brother in Christ to turn to during these times.

The passage highlights the power of two individuals working together. Two people can accomplish more than one person alone and can lift each other up in times of need. Furthermore, when two individuals work together, they become a strong and unbreakable force that is able to withstand any challenge when both men are relying on the Holy Spirit.

As followers of Christ, we are called to walk alongside each other in love and support. We were never meant to go through life alone as we were created for community. Having a mentor or brother in Christ can be a vital component of that community. These individuals can offer wisdom, guidance, and accountability, helping us to grow in our faith and navigate the challenges of life.

So, how can we find a mentor or brother in Christ? One way is to seek out opportunities for connection within our local church community. This could include joining a small group or attending a men’s ministry event. It may also involve stepping out of our comfort zone and initiating a conversation with someone we admire or respect.

As we seek to find a mentor or brother in Christ, let us also remember that the Holy Spirit is our ultimate guide and source of wisdom. Let us seek His leading in our relationships and trust that He will bring the right people into our lives at the right time.
