"There's Nothing" - a Three-Day Devotional by Amanda Cook Sample
“THERE’S NOTHING” DAY 2
A meditation of Romans 8:38-39
Find a place to sit comfortably, with your feet on the floor. Place your hands on your heart if you feel so inclined.
Gently focus your attention, it might help to picture yourself arriving at the door of a sanctuary, or to a sunny spot next to a tree in an open field. Might help to picture the hallway we were in yesterday.
Here Jesus waits.
He is patient. Attentive.
He is kind. Tuned in.
He’s got time, all the time in the world, all the time.
He’s not in a rush to be somewhere or do something.
His Presence is the gift
As is yours.
Feel your breathing slow down, naturally, like a tide.
Drop your shoulders if they were held high by your ears.
Unclench your jaw.
Uncurl your hands.
Let your eyes drift shut for a moment. Breathe in. Breathe out.
Open your eyes, and we will read the words of Romans 8:38-39 together, slowly, pausing between the stanzas. Feel the rise and fall of your chest. Feel free to take as much time as you need, if one word stands out more than the others, stay there a while. Take as much time as you need.
A blessing for this time. “May the Lord move your hearts into a greater understanding of God’s pure love for you and into Christ’s steadfast endurance.” 2 Thessalonians 3:5
Romans 8:38-39
“So,
Now I live
With the confidence,
That there is NOTHING
In the universe
With the power
To separate us
From God’s love.
I’m convinced,
That His love will triumph
Over death,
Life’s troubles,
Fallen angels,
Or dark rulers
In the heavens.
There is nothing
in our present
Or future circumstances
That can weaken
His love.
There is no power
Above us
Or beneath us
No power that could ever be found
In the universe
That can distance us
From God’s passionate love
Which is lavished upon us
Through our Lord Jesus,
The Anointed One.”
Take a deep breath in, focusing your thoughts on this one thought, then let it out, focusing again on this one thought.
Breathe in, nothing can separate me from the Love of God.
Breathe out, nothing can separate me from the Love of God.
Breathe in, nothing can separate me from the Love of God.
Breathe out, nothing can separate me from the Love of God.
Take this phrase with you into your day.

About this Plan
Intrusive thoughts come in with muddy shoes and mess up the house of my mind. Does Jesus really have time for my worries? I want so badly to believe that I’m worth the time but I seem to forget. Here Jesus waits. He is patient, attentive, kind, tuned in. His Presence is the gift. Join me for a ponderation, meditation, and exploration of Romans 8:38-39. -Amanda Cook
