OUR IDENTITY AND INHERITANCE IN CHRIST

“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” Ephesians 1:4-6 (NIV)

Background

Today’s historical background video on Ephesians highlights the struggles facing the church in the midst of the city’s spiritually-charged atmosphere.

Observation

In today’s reading of Ephesians 1, you’ll notice that Paul repeatedly identifies his readers as being “in Christ.” With that as their core identity, they are blessed (1:3), chosen (1:4), adopted (1:5), redeemed (1:7), united (1:10), promised an inheritance (1:11), and sealed with the Holy Spirit (1:13).

Interpretation

As you read Ephesians 1 for yourself, think about the encouragement that this would be to the original readers. Though the Ephesian church was very familiar with the powers of demons and idolatrous institutions, Paul affirms their possession of every blessing now that they are “in Christ.” This new identity, along with all of its blessings, empowered the church to stand firm in the midst of great spiritual darkness and opposition.

Application

Being “in Christ” is the core identity of all believers (see also Galatians 3:27-28). After today’s reading, consider how this truth empowers you to withstand the spiritual darkness you encounter. Spend some time in prayer about this.
