Take the Whole Armor of God

Can a soldier go into battle with only a part of their armor? No, of course not! If they did they would be vulnerable to attack, injury and death.

I am reminded of the film “Enemy at the Gates” where the Russian Army had plenty of soldiers, but not enough weapons to arm them. They sent soldiers out in pairs, one with a gun and the other with some bullets. Not a terribly effective way to fight a war!

Now consider the same situation for yourself as a Christian. Do you believe you are fully armored with all of the armor of God?

We are instructed to, “Take the WHOLE armor of God.” Not just a few pieces. Not just a sword without any protective coverings. Not just a shield for defense, because then we could not fight back. No, we are to take the WHOLE armor of God and to stand firm in it.

The armor of God is not physical either, because the war we are fighting is not a physical war. We are waging war in the Spirit, and so we need the spiritual armor of God if we are to fight and win. It is by using the various parts of the armor of God that we can defeat the attacks of the devil and the temptations that come against us to tear us away from Christ.

This spiritual war is being played out in the hearts and minds of Christians. Much of the battle is fought by setting our minds on the things of the Spirit and not the flesh. It is in the mind that the devil attacks by sowing seeds of doubt, condemnation, guilt, lies, and half-truths.

But when we learn how to use the weapons of the whole armor of God to capture our thoughts and to put to death the deeds of the flesh by the power of the Spirit, we overcome and can stand stronger in Christ. We learn how to walk in the Spirit at all times so that our mind is stayed on the Spirit and not the flesh.

Call to action:

Learn what the pieces of armor are and how to clothe yourself in each piece. Seek the truth, find out how God’s righteousness works in you, walk in the gospel of peace, keep salvation at the forefront of your mind, pray constantly, stand behind the shield of faith when attacked, and fill yourself with the word of God so the Spirit can fight for you.
