Wisdom for the FutureSample
Question 1: What is the problem?
You probably know yourself well enough to say if you’re an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist. Maybe you tend to panic in the face of problems. Or maybe you view the uphills of life’s journey as exciting contests that keep you fit. Either way, none of us escapes the fact that life has been, is, and always will be full of challenges. And all of us need God’s wisdom to navigate those challenges in ways that set us up to enjoy the abundant life Jesus promises.
So, we’re going to ask ourselves five powerful, practical questions that enhance our thinking and equip us with wisdom for the future. Many people end up feeling defeated by the challenges they face, and they settle for a lower quality of life. But that doesn’t have to be your story.
A great starting point – before asking yourself the first question – is to remember how John described Jesus: ‘The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it’ (John 1:4–5). No matter how dark your circumstances, they cannot dim Christ’s light in your life.
So, the first question is simply: What is the problem? Writing is an incredibly helpful tool for processing our thoughts and getting perspective. Spend some time journaling your answer to this first question, and be as specific as possible, jotting down reasons why this particular problem bothers you. Also, be aware that we sometimes face our challenges with a skewed mindset, and this can become a bigger problem than the problem itself. Pray with Paul, that ‘your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called…’ (Ephesians 1:18).
As you begin asking yourself these hard and honest questions, it’s ok to feel emotional, overwhelmed, and even stressed. Please don’t give up. These questions – starting with, What is the problem? – will open your heart and mind to the Holy Spirit’s work as He counsels you with the wisdom you’ll need for your future. Don’t put off this process until tomorrow or next week. There’s never going to be a better time than right now to take your first step on a journey toward greater perspective and real hope.
