Paul: Desert Days

DAY 5 OF 6

More Lessons from the Desert

We often find ourselves going through difficult times that can be likened to a desert experience. These times can push us to the brink, and we may struggle to find our way out. But as we go through trials, we can learn valuable lessons that will shape us and prepare us for the future.

One of the things that the desert teaches us is that we need to slow down and calm our hearts. We need to surrender to God and trust His plan for our lives. When we do this, we can experience a peace that passes all understanding, and our hearts can be calmed in the storm. Another lesson we can learn in the desert is the importance of quietness and listening. Getting caught up in the noise and chaos of our busy lives is easy. By slowing down and taking the time to listen, we can hear God’s still, small voice and be guided by His wisdom and love.

This reminds me of a story about my wife and me visiting a fancy boutique store. As soon as we walked in, I knew we were in trouble. The store was beautifully presented, with lovely scents that filled the air. My wife’s eyes lit up, and I could feel my wallet getting lighter. I knew we weren’t leaving without buying something. As we wandered around, I noticed that my wife was drawn to a candle with a warm sand scent. I had never heard of such a thing, and I was skeptical. I mean, warm sand is not really a scent, right? But my wife insisted, and we ended up buying the candle. Now, whenever we light the candle, our home is filled with the warm and inviting scent of sand—the scent of the desert.

So, as you navigate your desert, remember that it is a place for calming your heart and increasing your faith. Take a moment to slow down, be quiet, and listen. Like that warm candle, the Bible is a light for our path. Its words are there to calm us and remind us that we serve a sovereign God. Don’t wait until life becomes overwhelming to take stock of the blessings in your life. Find comfort in the desert’s warm sand and God’s calming presence. When you come across something that challenges your skepticism, like a candle with a warm sand scent, don’t be so quick to dismiss it. Embrace new experiences and try new things, even if they seem unconventional. Who knows? They might surprise you and bring a new sense of comfort and joy.
