Biblical Self-Care

DAY 2 OF 4

Biblical Self-Care (Part 2)

“If you find a job that doesn’t feel like work, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Do you believe that? Jesus had the most important work ever, but He got tired, so tired He once fell fast asleep in an uncomfortable boat. The apostle Paul admitted his work of sharing Jesus was so hard that he experienced sleepless nights. This means that your work, even if it’s good work, is going to feel like work.

Maybe I’m just getting older, but I’m noticing a lot of younger Christians who are quick to quit their work once it gets hard. Some say it is a necessary step for their mental health and that God doesn’t want them to be stressed. While I agree there are times when it’s good to find new employment, quitting after a hard week is a good way to stay weak. There are seasons in life when it’s time to care about a greater good and start thinking about caring for others.

God promised Adam, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground” (Genesis 3:19). You’re going to sweat. The thorns and thistles and people are going to make work feel like work. But life isn’t only about self-care. It’s also about the work that cares for others. So ask God for the strength to stick with it, not to quit, to get up again, and to serve others in Jesus’ name.
