Who knows What God Will Do Through Your Child?

We all love the story of the young shepherd boy David defeating the Philistine giant, Goliath. Somehow this twiggy boy had enough courage to stand up to a trained soldier many times his size.

While this is definitely an encouraging story of how God can use children, that’s not the part of the story that moves my heart most. Before David fought Goliath, Saul had David brought to him and said, “You can’t go fight this Philistine. You’re just a youth, and he’s been a warrior since he was young” (1 Samuel 17:33).

David replied: “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it” (verses 34–35).

Others might have used this as an opportunity to brag about their own strength, but David knew it was God who had allowed him to fight off those wild animals. He went on to say, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine” (verse 37).

Because of his previous experiences with God, David had confidence that God would help him defeat the Philistine. Compared with God’s strength, Goliath seemed small!

Do you see? God doesn’t just use children; He does much more than that. God reveals Himself to children so they might know Him and walk confidently with Him.

God has assignments for our children. God has plans for our children. God has places for them and roles for them. Who knows what God wants to do through our children or in what ways He wants to use them in His kingdom?

When we teach our children to talk with God and listen for His voice, they will see for themselves that God is who He says He is. And this is far more powerful than simply taking our word for it.

God, give me grace to come alongside [child’s name] and pray. Give me a tender and discerning heart to know how to lead [child’s name] well. May we see You every day in all the little crevices of life. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
