Overcoming Mom Guilt: Gospel Truth for MothersSample

Overcoming Mom Guilt: Gospel Truth for Mothers

DAY 5 OF 5

The list of roles we play as moms is endless.

Gourmet Chef.

Taxi Driver.

Party Planner.

Administrative Coordinator.

Comforter-in-Chief.

Nightwatch Woman.

And for good measure, let’s just add on full-time employee, part-time employee, stay-at-home-mom, work-from-home-mom, or any combination of those.

There is no end to the number of things we think we should take on in the name of being the best wife/mother/sister/woman.

If it feels like a lot, it’s because it is a lot. If you’re like me, your pulse is racing just thinking about all of the things you need to do. If you’re thinking of all of the roles you play IN ADDITION to these, I get it.

The odds are, if you are like me, you sometimes look around you and see everyone else managing things and you wonder how in the world they’re doing it and why don’t I measure up.

But while you’re looking in awe at someone else and how they keep it together, there are people marveling at how well you are keeping it together, spinning all your plates.

We each think the other one has it all figured out because we don’t know all the details.

But the truth is: no one can do it all.

Not one single mom on this planet can take on everything with grace and do it all with poise. And that’s okay.

We weren’t designed to do everything on our own.

We were designed and created by God and given very specific gifts. You were given very specific gifts and a purpose all your own.

And each time any of us tries to do it all, it doesn’t work out, because we’re living outside of the actual gifts and superpowers God has given us.

Have you ever thought about that before? That God made you so intentionally that your best days will be ones where you live fully into your gifts and purpose? It’s amazing!

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul outlines some of the gifts God bestows upon His children. In verses 4-10, he says this:

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

I’ll admit, it took me a long time to figure out what kind of mom I am. What kind of mom He made me to be, but when I did, it changed everything. I began to focus only on things that I know I’m really good at and I let the rest go, the stuff I didn’t have to do. I’ve never looked back.

Maybe you’re a mom who could use some clarity about what kind of mom God has made her to be. I’m going to give you a solution that will sound a little too simple. pray. Simply ask God to show you who He has made you to be.

Ask Him to make it abundantly clear what kind of mom you’re meant to be for your kids. And when He answers, because He will, go mother in that way and forget the rest.

That is something we can enjoy. I encourage you to find your motherhood superpower in the Lord and through Him. Go to Him in prayer. Go to Him for strength. Go to Him for love. Go to Him for endurance. He will never let you down. He will never disappoint. He is with you day after day as a mom.

Amen and amen.

Lord, I confess that I’ve been trying to do it all. I want to be the mother you have made me to be instead of trying to be everything to everyone. Holy Spirit, guide me and I will follow. Amen.
