Eyes to SeeSample
We began this journey with the theory that seeing is loving. We talked about the fact that when we really see, we are changed. When we put a face or a name to a story or when we actually see a difference happening, well, that is when our heart starts getting engaged. That is when we get excited and inspired. So, now it’s time to roll up our sleeves.
If your eyes are opening to the ways God is working in the world, it may be tempting to want to get out there and do something immediately. However, when we don’t start with prayer, we can slide too quickly into our agendas, feeling like heroes or saviours. When we pray, we remember our own poverty and our dependence on God.
Pray:
- For God’s guidance on how He would have you take action to help others.
- God would fill you with His Holy Spirit so you can remain rooted in Him and depend on His strength while helping others.
- That those you hear about in the news or issues you learn about on social media.
- For your government and community decision-makers.
- For those in your neighbourhood and their needs as you learn about them.
Live:
When we see for ourselves the needs in front of us, we love and are compelled to do something. One of the most effective ways to do this is to seek out long-term partnerships. This will allow you to get to know people and their stories and for them to get to know yours — including the love of Jesus.
Here are some ideas on how to live differently:
- Advocate for just systems with your vote and voice.
- Shop locally and ethically.
- If you employ others, pay them a living wage.
- Give those at your church from marginalized groups an opportunity to contribute to decision-making.
- Get involved in local organizations already at work helping people in your community (food banks, ESL classes, foster children, support groups for people with disabilities).
- Consider a new and unique way to use your gifts— start a community garden, provide meals, or knit blankets for a local women’s shelter.
Give:
Remember that all we have belongs to God. Part of our response to God includes being generous with our finances.
Here are some ideas for giving wisely:
- Give regularly to your church and the ministries they have in place.
- Put your money where your heart is and become a regular donor to local charities you admire.
- Raise funds and awareness for local causes that reflect Jesus' Kingdom values.
- Give your extra possessions, or consider using your home or vehicle to serve others.
God is in the business of rescuing the world. That’s what He did through the death of Jesus on the cross for our salvation. It’s also what He’s still doing today—drawing people to His grace and, at the same time, inviting every person in the world into an abundant life here, now, and forever. Just as He calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, so too does He care about the well-being of people’s souls, hearts, minds, and bodies.
Reflect:
- How is Jesus calling you to pray, live or give to your community today? Share some ideas together as a group.
Pray:
Lord, thank You for placing me right where I am. You have blessed me so that I might be a blessing. Help me to see with Your eyes, and then to be Your hands and feet in this place. Amen.
