The Battle: Embracing the Life of Faith
Now without faith, it is impossible to please him. For it is necessary that anyone coming to God must believe that he exists and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6
“The life of faith is a true life, indeed the only life.” William Perkins quoted in Jeremiah Burroughs, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment
Job’s story is unique in that he lived in a remarkable time, underwent special tests, and endured an extraordinary torrent of suffering. However, in another sense, Job’s story is our story: a life story common to every man and woman. Along with divine favor, Job underwent grueling tests of profound spiritual significance. He knew and longed for the good life but experienced the ruthless attacks of a brutal foe. A man of deep piety, Job felt the painful weight of suffering and loss. He knew the joy of profound family relationships but was also deeply wounded by the grief and pain of losing loved ones. Through all of these experiences, Job faced the challenges of genuine faith. The questions that beat in his heart pulse through our spiritual veins: What is the good life? Why is there evil in this world? How long must we suffer? Where will I place my trust?
In Job 1:1–2:13, the Bible records the story of Job’s prosperity and suffering. He is a godly man who enjoyed God-given blessings. When Satan questioned God’s goodness and sought to test the integrity of Job’s faith, Job experienced excruciating suffering. Because of his abiding belief in God’s goodness, Job maintained his faith in God with a heart of sincere worship and complete devotion. Job’s faithful response amid terrible suffering, alongside the character of God―God’s incredible goodness, eternal perfection, majestic power, and inescapable glory―all shine through this story. This true account of Job’s suffering is a great starting point for all followers of Jesus who want to build a strong foundation for their faith. Through the study of Job’s epic life, may God’s grace provide timely comfort, unveil unexpected spiritual insight, and spark steadfast resolve to live a life entirely devoted to God.
