The Untangling
The bad news: simplifying probably isn't the most fun you will ever have. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of work. But here's the good news: if you're willing to look at what isn't working, you can move beyond where you are right now.
Getting back to basics requires a little time and a lot of honesty.
If where you are is not where you want to be, you can give yourself the gift of clarity by answering the following questions:
Where do I feel stuck or tangled?
What causes me anxiety when I begin to think about that area?
Where do I think I should be farther ahead?
Your answers should lead you to some areas that need to be untangled. Of course, this process is not for the faint of heart. We all have blind spots, and sometimes we need a little help to see them. But now you have a great jumping-off point for some growth.
Caveat: growth is often uncomfortable.
God didn't create us to be stuck or stagnant. Life doesn't have to be as complicated as we make it. He wants us to walk out our purpose for his glory. We may need to simplify to do that well. Sometimes this looks like letting go, saying goodbye, or telling people no.
I warned you this might be uncomfortable!
We can take a lesson on getting back to basics from Paul. He writes in Philippians 4:12-13, I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
More stuff jammed in our calendars, finances, homes, and hearts does not create happiness. It will not give us the joy of the Lord or the peace that passes understanding. Instead, more clutter usually equals more distractions we eventually have to do something with. Want to live with purpose?
Keep it simple, friend.
Prayer: Lord, I will need your help on this! Show me where things have gotten too tangled and messy, and then show me how to make them better. I don't want to stay stuck or be in this same place next year or even next month. Please show me how to move forward, make good choices, and walk out the purpose you have for me. In Jesus' name, amen!
