Acts: Go & Be Chapters 10-18Sample
What is this passage saying?
On their way to Macedonia the disciples arrive in Philippi. Tony Evans writes, “The Church in Philippi would be the first one Paul would start in Europe, and he would pen his first letter to the Philippians about a decade later or so.” In this passage we get to read about a woman who was a worshipper of God, Lydia. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to Paul’s words, she believed and was baptized. She wasn’t the only one- her entire household was baptized. Lydia then opens her home to the apostles to stay with her. It is amazing how when the Lord changes a person, He give them attributes of Himself. He makes people and kind and generous. Jesus calls us to deeds that are contrary to our natural desires. The goodness of God is that when He saves us, He changes us through the sanctification process. When it’s said that He never leave us, that doesn’t mean just in hardships. He also never leaves you in your sin. He is with you always, that is why after you become a Christian sin feels so foreign. Jesus is making you better and in the act of becoming better, we begin to lose our desire to sin. Generosity with no strings attached is not normal for fallen man- Lydia was truly saved and she was already living out her salvation.
What is this passage teaching?
We read in the previous passage that the Lord was clearly directing the paths of the disciples. In their faithfulness to follow the Lord’s promptings they were led to Philippi. While in Philippi the disciples did what they always did, shared the gospel. As they were sharing, they led Lydia to the Lord. The disciples did this because this is what they were called to do. Because of their faithfulness the Lord provided somewhere for them to stay. The Lord is so kind to call us into ministry and to entrust us with His ministry on earth. As we follow what He has called us to do, He also provides for us. His kindness is boundless. He is with His people; He takes care of His people. Christian brother and sister, you will always find the Lord to be faithful. Now we must be faithful to do as He has called us.
How do I respond?
Be faithful to do as God has called you. Even if you do not know exactly what your career is or where exactly the Lord is calling you to, He has not hidden the fact that all believers are called to share the Gospel. So be faithful and praise the Lord when He is faithful to you. Be kind and generous to all. Christians are meant to be a blessing, so bless other with the attributes the Lord has given you.
