A Single Life to LiveSample
God Has a Purpose in Singleness
What would your life need to look like so that it wouldn’t matter if you were single or in a relationship? What dreams would you need to pursue, what goals would you need to achieve so that each morning you could wake up and feel happy about how your days are filled?
In the Old Testament, we have the story of Nehemiah chasing after a dream that God placed on his heart. That dream was to rebuild Jerusalem. Nehemiah was not in any way qualified to do this. He was a cupbearer to the king, not someone who knew about construction, but that did not stop Nehemiah from chasing after this dream.
He assembled people to help him. They even had to hold weapons in one hand while doing constructions because of their adversaries. But Nehemiah persisted in every trial. After fifty-two days, the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt, and numerous Israelites returned to celebrate and dedicate their lives to God. All because of a dream God placed on Nehemiah’s heart.
So, what about you? Romans 12 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
God has given you talents and abilities that are specially chosen for you. As singles, a great way to stop focusing on what we feel is lacking in our lives is by using and flourishing in the talents and abilities God has given us.Maybe right now you have a nudge in your brain to volunteer, start a charity, write that letter to someone, help the lady cross the street, or start that business. If you can’t think of anything, ask yourself the question, “What breaks my heart?” and try to do something about that—whether its fighting human trafficking or reaching out to a hurting friend.
Take one tiny step to start doing that thing in your brain and see where it goes. Just like the dream God placed on Nehemiah’s heart, your dream can have a huge impact. It may just make you so excited with your life that you can truly say “It doesn’t matter if I am single or in a relationship because I am so content following God’s calling for my life.” What is that step you can take today?
