Reading our bibles can be a daunting task. If we're not careful, it's easy to fall into a rut of either not reading or reading our Bibles for all the wrong reasons. So why do we need to read the Bible? What can we get out of it?
First, we need to realize the Bible is not a book about ourselves. It is not a “self help” manual that takes us step by step through our lives. The Bible is a book about God. The Bible is a love story about a Father creating and caring for His kids, showing his love for them by sending His Son. Jesus is at the center. All roads point back to him, all roads lead straight to the cross. The work of Christ on earth, and especially his crucifixion and resurrection, is the climax of history. It is the great turning point where God actually accomplished the salvation which history had been moving toward throughout the Old Testament.
The Word guides us on our daily walk, learning from others who have gone before us. Their mistakes, victories, sacrifices and teaching can guide us into a closer relationship with God. The Bible is one of God’s main ways of speaking directly to us, His kids. He wants us to read about him, He wants us to learn about him and in doing so come into a greater knowledge and understanding of his goodness and grace.
God also wants to transform us through our time spent in the Bible. He is intent on pouring his knowledge and wisdom into our lives through our regular time spent reading the Word. The first 10 days of this plan will be spent digging into the Bible, spending time in both the New and Old Testaments while we look at how the Word both guides and transforms our lives.
As you read our verse today, whose plan do you see yourself following more, yours or Gods?
