Ten Massive Leadership Questions

DAY 7 OF 10

What is my ministry?

At the risk of sounding selfish, the emphasis on the question “What is my ministry” is on “my”. However, it is actually not selfish at all. It is prudent and in the best interests of the whole church that you answer that question thoughtfully and prayerfully and then act accordingly. Let me use an analogy from sports.

In football, the goalkeeper has a very specific role. He is also specifically equipped for that role in terms of the game’s rules and physical equipment. He may touch the ball with his hands in a certain area (unlike the other players) and he gets to wear gloves and other protective gear. However, should the goalkeeper constantly run around at the front of the field and get in the way of the forward strikers, chances are good his teammates are going to get frustrated, he will get frustrated, they will lose the match, and everyone will get discouraged.

COUNTING HOW MANY GOALS YOU SCORE AS A GOALKEEPER MAKES NO SENSE! So why on earth do you want to do that in ministry? You are not supposed to be the other person. That is why God did not equip you with the necessary “equipment” for that role. He has equipped you with the necessary passion, skills, and gifts for the ministry He assigned to you. And if you run around trying to be a striker if you are supposed to be a goalkeeper, the team is going to be in trouble. On that note, since some people are supposed to be strikers, they aren’t supposed to be goalkeepers. Make sure you don’t guilt people into being passionate about what you are doing. They must also, just like you and me, answer the question: “What is my ministry?”
