Living with Integrity: The Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Commandments
The eighth, ninth, and tenth commandments guide us toward a life of integrity in how we act, speak, and think. Together, they call us to respect others, live truthfully, and cultivate contentment, building a foundation of trust and fairness in our relationships. These commands challenge us to reflect God’s justice and faithfulness in every area of life.
The eighth commandment prohibits stealing (Exodus 20:15). This command is about more than physical theft—it addresses dishonesty and taking what is not rightfully ours, whether through exploitation, manipulation, or deceit. God calls us to honor the rights of others and to pursue honest work, as Paul reminds believers to labor diligently and share with those in need (Ephesians 4:28). How are you respecting the boundaries of others and fostering a spirit of generosity?
The ninth commandment commands truthfulness (Exodus 20:16). Speaking truth is vital for trust and justice. Lies, exaggeration, or gossip undermine relationships and damage reputations. Proverbs 11:3 reminds us that the upright are guided by honesty, while dishonesty leads to ruin. As followers of Christ, we are called to represent His character in how we communicate. Are your words truthful and uplifting, or do they create division?
The tenth commandment shifts the focus inward, addressing covetousness (Exodus 20:17). Envy and discontentment can lead to bitterness, conflict, and actions that harm others. Coveting also blinds us to God’s provision, causing us to focus on what we lack instead of what we have. James 4:1-3 warns that unchecked desires lead to strife. Choosing gratitude and trusting God’s plan frees us from envy’s grip. Are you content with what God has provided, or are you distracted by comparisons?
These commandments show that integrity begins in the heart. They invite us to respect others’ property, speak honestly, and live with gratitude, reflecting God’s righteousness in all we do. This week, consider: Are your actions respectful, your words truthful, and your heart content? Let these principles guide you as you honor God in your daily life.
About this Plan
Although the Ten Commandments were given thousands of years ago, the wisdom and guidance God imparted to Moses through them at Mount Sinai still speaks to our modern lives. Far from being outdated rules, these commandments reveal God’s heart for justice, love, and holiness. They guide our relationships—with Him and with others—and challenge us to live with integrity in a world of shifting values. Are these ancient divine edicts still relevant in a world so different from that which the Israelites experienced? Absolutely! This four-day devotional will explore just how and why.
