As a child I always wanted to grow up, but it never seemed to come. I remember being in grade school and the days and years seemed to go by so slowly. The time from Kindergarten to graduating high school felt like an eternity. Since becoming an adult things have changed drastically. It feels like three weeks go by and all of a sudden it’s Christmas and time to usher in a New Year. Time with my daughter has flown by and she’s gone from a toddler to a high school student in the blink of an eye.
In the big scheme of things our time here on earth is short. As I’ve aged I find myself thinking more and more on legacy. In other words, what mark will I leave on this life? What impact will I make when it’s all said and done with my family and friends? What will people have to say about me when I’m dead and gone? In the end I don’t think our family and friends will define us by how much money we had, what successes or failures we had during our careers, or by how much property we accumulate. Instead our legacy will be defined by our commitment to God and the influence we had over others for his Kingdom.
In Joshua chapter 14, Caleb has likely reached a similar place in life as I mentioned above. He’s lived a long full life (85 years old) but continues to do everything he can to live a life that honors God. Joshua 14:8 Caleb says, “but my brothers who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.” This is a perfect example of the legacy I want for my own life. No money or possessions will live as long as a legacy of following God wholeheartedly. May this legacy be the one that directs our path on this earth now and forevermore!
