Daily PresenceSample
Oftentimes we are quick to commit to doing something in the new year with the intention of being closer to God. We may start a new devotional, commit more time to meditation and prayer, or volunteer more of our time. These are all wonderful ways for us to ensure we are rooted in service to Christ. However, sometimes, it’s not about what we are willing to do, but what we are willing to give up that can honor God.
In Genesis 22 God commands Abraham to take Isaac to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him on an altar. A son just a few chapters prior, God promised to give Abraham. A son that Abraham never thought he would have. Yet, now God is asking Abraham to sacrifice this precious gift he has so recently received. Faithful as ever, Abraham leads his one and only son up to Mount Moriah to be sacrificed. Yet, right before he is to strike Isaac, an angel of the Lord comes and stops Abraham. God was testing Abraham’s faith. Faith in Him as well as his faith in what matters most - God’s commandments to us.
Now, you may have something you know you need to give up, but you are thinking, “I don’t know if I can.” You may even fear what your life will look like if you sacrifice this thing. Just like in the story, As Abraham and Isaac make their way up the mountain, Isaac asks, “We have the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” Abraham replies, “God will provide a sheep for the offering, my son.” No matter what you sacrifice, God will honor your sacrifice and fill the void that is left with his Holy Spirit.
In this new year, examine what God is calling you to lay on the altar. Examine what may be hindering your walk with Him so that you may show your faithfulness to a father that was willing to give up His most precious gift to save us.
