Daily Presence

DAY 19 OF 365

As we read of the Passover in Egypt, it is obvious God is foreshadowing the coming of Christ. Just as God instructed the Jews to spread the blood of a lamb over their doorposts in order to protect from the Passover in Egypt, we too experience the Passover from death through the protection of the blood of Christ. Not only that, but just as the Jews received guidance from the pillar of cloud and fire, we have the same guidance through the Holy Spirit.

I think I fit firmly into the old stereotype of not asking for directions. I am proud of my ability to remember how to get places without the help of reminders, GPS, or maps. However, since being married, it has been revealed to me that my skills are not as sharp as I once believed. Multiple times Bree and I found ourselves going down the wrong path due to my arrogance and false confidence. What I realized is this: when I was single and alone and missed a turn or got lost, I would just wander around trying to figure out how to get to where I was going, and it was no problem. But, once I was married, this “figuring it out as I go” thing was not working.

God knew the Jews to be the same way. If he left them to their own devices, they would probably have never made it out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and eventually to the promised land. So, he sent them the Old Testament version of GPS: a pillar of cloud and fire. Just as the Jews were led by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, we too have a pillar to guide us: the pillar of the Holy Spirit that resides within us. For the Jews, the pillar of fire was a representation of God’s guidance. Today, God’s guidance is seen through His spirit that resides in us and His holy word. Through prayer and study of God’s word, we can keep ourselves on track with the trail He has planned for us. Taking wrong turns only delays the journey.
