Daily Presence

DAY 105 OF 365

I still remember when I came to the realization that I had no more money in my savings account to pay for another semester of my master’s. I had no idea what I was going to do and I was seriously considering going back to Costa Rica, making some more money, and then coming back to the USA. The government didn’t let me work outside of the University and I had just been denied a position based upon the fact that I was an immigrant and the government placed restrictions on my work. I felt like I had done everything I could, but it simply was not enough. I could picture myself with my tail between my legs going back to Costa Rica feeling like I made the wrong decision of moving in the first place. Right when I had almost given up, I got a call from the campus pastor who had become a friend of mine, telling me to apply for a position in the ministry department. It was a position that provided a full scholarship. In a matter of one to two days, God came through, I was hired and no longer had to move back.

The story of God’s provision to Elijah is one we can all relate to in one way or another. Elijah didn’t have anything to eat and God provided. He sends ravens to feed him and provides water in the middle of a drought. After Elijah had been blessed, God provided an opportunity for him to bless someone else. Elijah finds someone who was in a similar situation as he was before. He finds a widow who has nothing to eat and is ready to die. That’s when God showed up and provided.

I don’t mean to come here and tell you I know exactly the way God works. The truth is, I don’t, but it’s always too soon to quit. God will move when you least expect it and sometimes in unexpected ways. I understand that at times it feels like he’s not working. Elijah and the widow had to rely on God’s daily provision and multiplication to survive. Our God is a good God who loves and cares for our provision.

Matthew 6:26-27 “ Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
