Year of the Bible: Part Eleven of Twelve

DAY 15 OF 30

The Hall of Faith

This chapter begins with the important definition of faith: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).

The Greek word for faith is pistis. It means to have assurance, conviction, or trust. Therefore, this verse is telling us that it is by our trust—our confidence—in God that we may obtain a "good testimony."

So, where does this faith come from? According to Romans 10:17, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." The key action in this verse is that faith comes. We cannot manufacture or create our faith. We receive faith in the same manner as salvation: by grace.

However, we can foster an atmosphere of grace by reading, meditating on, and praying the Word of God. These activities set us up to receive faith.

Hebrews 11 is the testimony of many men and women who received this faith from God and then acted on that faith in obedience to His calling. These heroes of faith are examples for us to follow so we, too, may receive confidence from God to accomplish anything He has directed us to.

Question: Have you experienced the disappointment or failure of trying to walk in a "faith" of your own making? Have you experienced the joy and victory of walking in a "faith" you received from God? How did those experiences impact your relationship with Jesus?

Prayer: Father, thank you for the examples of the men and women of scripture who walked in faith. Grant me ears to hear Your word as you fill me with Your faith to accomplish Your will for my life.
